Powerful Quotations

June 30, 2009

I am always hungry for quotations. I consider them to be pearls of wisdom. I call the following quotes powerful because, they have had a huge influence in changing the way that I have thought about certain things/people.

“The Liar’s punishment is not in the least that he is not believed, but that he cannot believe anyone else” – George Bernard Shaw

Think about it. Just think about it. I have reduced lying just because of this single quote ๐Ÿ˜‰

“The mind is everything. It is in the mind alone that one feels pure and impure. A man, first of all makes his own mind guilty and then alone he sees another man’s guilt” – Sri Sarada Devi

I don’t remember where I read this quote, but the explanation given there for the above quote is even more interesting – If you get angry about a particular quality in someone (say jealousy), then you have that quality somewhere deep inside you and you are actually getting angry due to the presence that quality in yourselves. You don’t normally get angry when you read the news of a murder in a newspaper, do you?

“You are responsible for whatever happens around you”

I don’t really remember the exact wording of this quote, so the one you see above is an approximate version of it. I was first thinking how this could be possible. I mean, if my neighbour falls down on the road, how can I be responsible for that? But then, the truth and the wisdom of this quote slowly took me over. There was a School Pupil Leader (SPL) in my school who was walking around when he say a little girl (may be 2nd or 3rd standard) kneeling down outside. He asked her why she was kneeling down, and she said that she didn’t do her homework the previous day because they went for a movie. He immediately went in to the class, spoke with the teacher, apologised for the girl and made sure that she was back in the class after promising him that she would be regular with her homework in the future. That was not his job and he need not have done it, I have even seen previous SPL’s who were arrogant, bossing around etc. If you understand the wisdom of this quotation, you will understand why certain people are born leaders.

“When you show a finger at someone (blame someone) kindly notice that one finger points at him, one finger points at God and three fingers point back at you”

So if you are a believer of this quote: “The United States has taken all our best and worst people from us”, then you will realize that you need to read the previous quote once again! Ok, this was done just to add some humour ๐Ÿ™‚

If there were similar quotations which influenced you, please put them down in the comments section or in your blog. I would love to add them to my collection!

  1. lemme give you one quotation…

    Hitchy is first !!!!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

    • That has become a quote, for sure!! But being in the pole position always has this risk of some one rising from the ashes like the Phoenix and taking over the mantle….. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. lol… now that you havent killed me for the one i gave you…

I must say I like and totally agree with ” You are responsible for whatever happens around you.. ”

    Its almost my philosophy…

    • That is an interesting quote, the version I read was far more effective than the simplistic one I have put up here…

  3. Brilliant quotes! I especially liked the first one! Also the third is very true and relevant!

    • The first one is something that took me off-guard too… didn’t expect it and when the realization came in, I was taken aback! You can replace lies with any other vice, and still the quote will hold good!

  4. Loved them all . You should have added more . ๐Ÿ™‚

“It is easier to denounce evil than to understand it”

“If we cannot learn to exist within the realms of diversity , we will perish”

    • That’s a gem – being easier to denounce evil than to understand it! But I think somewhere down the line we need to make conscious efforts to understand it! After all, no one chooses to be evil for the fun of it….

  5. in the corporate world, my fav is “even if you win a rat-race, at the end of the race, you are still a rat.”

    ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Being a rat is much better than being a scape-goat!! ๐Ÿ™‚ But being a scape goat has its advantages too, the big picture is not always evident to us!

  6. I don’t really agree with the 2nd quote tho. but the rest are all good.

here are a few of my favourite quotes:

If you want to do something, there’s always a reason. If you DON’T want to do something, there’s always an excuse.

Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off your goal…

There are two things to aim for in life: first, to get what you want; and, after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second.

Opportunities are never lost – someone else always takes the ones you miss

Dreams are not the ones you see when you go to sleep, they are the ones that keep you awake until you achieve them…

    • Wow, thanks for those quotes, I knew only two of them before! The quotes are more like point-of-view’s. The second quote may not be true at all, but the possibility that it might be true is what bothering me!

  7. actually pointing at someone with your thumb opened is a sign of saying I am as you are ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Being so wise and thoughtful at a very young age might spoil the fun!! But your understanding of certain concepts is too good…

  8. Oh, you should have a look at my orkut album for the quotes that inspire me. I name it Quotos – photos with quotes. Each photo in the album (comprising 35) is related to a quote. (type vimmuuu in the search box if you wanna find me)

One of them goes something like – Failure is not when you fall down, it is when you refuse to get up.

Btw, how do you Selva Ganesh ? He is my best buddy! How do I refer your name to him? Im sure he is not going to know Destination Infinity ๐Ÿ˜€

    • I have added you in orkut, it doesn’t allow me to watch the photos though!

  9. Love the quotes. I too am a quote freak. Always looking for a new one to inspire. Thanks for sharing these!

    • Yeah, quotes are for inspiration and also for opening the eyes (especially for me!).

  10. wonderful quotes DI ๐Ÿ™‚ I just loved them..
    especially,

/*The mind is everything. It is in the mind alone that one feels pure and impure. A man, first of all makes his own mind guilty and then alone he sees another manโ€™s guiltโ€ โ€“ Sri Sarada Devi*/

I will read it again and again ๐Ÿ™‚

    • That was the most controversial of all the quotes, and I somehow think it makes sense!

  11. aHH..I TOO LOVE QUOTES!! I often tweet them ๐Ÿ™‚ Umust have read at my blog but still I am pasting here my two fave ones

โ€œAll men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.โ€
    โ€”

    T.E.Lawrence

โ€œOneโ€™s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And, the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.โ€
    โ€”

    โ€“ Eleanor Roosevelt

    • I think the last line of acting for their dreams with open eyes to make it possible is the most important. One quote I am reminded of, in this context is : “The smallest action is better than the grandest intention”

  12. One more for you :
We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done.
That is the irony of life! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • After reading this quote, I am realizing how true it is!! It is ironical indeed.

  13. loved the quotes here ..

I loved the first one the best! ๐Ÿ™‚
    its so true..(In my opinion)

I love reading quotes and jotting them down whenever I like them ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Yeah, the first one is absolutely true. I have no doubts about it… I have a collection of more than 500 quotes, but mostly they were collected before some years when I was in college..

  14. I loved the story about the SPL…and yes it is true, that we are responsible for what happens around us…

Another one for you, is about how it is okay to hate the Sin but not the Sinner (Gandhi). I think this can make us think objectively, without too much judging.

Now Destination Infinity all day I am going to be thinking about quotes (I used to have a collection too)!

    • That’s a gem – about hating the sin and not the sinner. But it is hard to follow. I recently bought a book filled with quotes by Gandhi… may be this one is there – I will post about the best of the quotes from that book, soon.

  15. DI, I use quotes a lot. Always my inspiration.

One quote I remember and got inspired during school days is from competition success interview of an IIT/AIIMS topper(don’t remember which one)

‘Top is like a cone. You slip many times while going high and once you reach there it is even tougher to stay as there is place for only one person. Slightest jerk and you come sliding down.’

  16. Awesome collection and even better ones in the comments!

Ah I love the second one you quoted the best..

    • I too think the second one was the best of the four. But people cannot accept certain things immediately…
